CRI international provides participants with opportunities to bridge cultural and social divides through collaborative and creative activities. CRI’s model challenges the traditional service learning model by creating experiences that require the active participation and creativity of both parties without giving one or the other the upper hand. By working collaboratively participants increase their cultural competency, empathy, communication skills, and creativity. Furthermore, by working to achieve shared goals and products, participants develop their voices while also learning to listen, both essential skills that are sorely needed in the quest for global social justice.
“This trip absolutely confirmed that I want to go into education. I’ve also been thinking a lot about the idea of learning before service and letting the people who actually live in the communities take the reins on reforms.” –Liam
